Ariana Qrande No Tears Left To

Following the Manchester Arena bombing during her Dangerous Woman Tour in May 2017, Ariana Grande became reluctant to record new music, preferring to spend time with her loved ones because of the emotional impact the tour had on her.[1] "No Tears Left to Cry" was the first song Grande wrote with Max Martin, Ilya and Savan Kotecha for Sweetener, after working with Pharrell Williams for most of the album.[2] She wanted her first single since the bombing to be hopeful and touch on the incident, but not dwell on it.[3] The song came about when Grande said, "I want it to be positive and talk about positivity and love. I don't have any tears left to cry."[2] Martin then sang the chorus melody.[3] They composed the music before writing the lyrics.[4]

On Wednesday night, Grande wrote on Twitter, "remember when i was like hey i have no tears left to cry and the universe was like HAAAAAAAAA b***h u thought." She admitted on Thursday, though, that she has grown from her challenging experiences in the past several months.

The sound of 'No Tears Left To Cry' is much different than what Grande has put out previously. It's relatively minimal, but says a lot with what it has. Atop its lowkey R&B fusion, Grande sings longingly and almost distantly, the chorus passionately echoing her happiness with where she is in life right now: "Right now, I'm in a state of mind / I wanna be in like all the time." She continues on to say she's done hurting, after tragedies like losing family members and what happened in Manchester, she's ready to move forward and take all that pain and make something of it, chanting: "Ain't got no tears left to cry / So I'm pickin' it up, pickin' it up." Grande's vocals aren't as flashy as usual, keeping things modest as she maintains a new maturity in the song.

On April 9, 2018, it was reported that Grande was set to release the lead single from her upcoming fourth studio album on April 27, 2018.[6] On April 16, 2018, it was reported that she may move up the lead single release to April 20, 2018, due to labelmate Post Malone's album being released on April 27.[7] On April 17, 2018, Grande announced that the lead single was titled "no tears left to cry" and would be released on April 20, 2018.[1] On April 18, Grande slowly shared the cover on Instagram by posting different sections each time, and also posted a 30-second snippet of the song. Grande hosted a listening party in London earlier in the week.[8]

Laura Snapes of The Guardian called the song an "instant earworm", and praised Ariana for tackling "the single alone rather than with a guest, as she often does". Snapes also complimented on the inclusion of "some satisfyingly specific lyrical barbs" aimed at the haters.[10] Andrew Unterberger from Billboard stated 'no tears left to cry' as "a grower, not to be fully appreciated on first listen".[11] Chris Willman of Variety described the song as "the breeziest, most danceable kind of post-traumatic recovery anthem with dark undertones".[12] Writing for MTV News, Charlie Holmes regarded the song as "the anthem we needed", and believed that it "[spoke] to her experience, healing her hurt, while simultaneously doing the same for the world".[13] Daniel Welsh of HuffPost called the song "[e]xciting, emotional and unlike anything she's done before", and he liked the message of it, describing it as being "about picking yourself up, leaving the darkness behind and dancing into the light".[14] Ryan Reed of Rolling Stone wrote that "Grande celebrates rising above the world's negativity" with "positive vibes on [the] upbeat new song".[15] The Guardian listed "No Tears Left to Cry" as the 3rd best song of 2018, along with Grande's "Thank U, Next" as the 6th.[16] Billboard's "100 Best Songs of 2018" list placed "No Tears Left to Cry" at #14.[17] 041b061a72
